Judicial Discipline

Virgin Islands justices,  judges and magistrates are bound by strict ethical rules in all of their professional dealings pursuant to Rule 209 of the Rules of the Supreme Court, which establishes the Commission on Judicial Conduct.  The Commission investigates complaints alleging that a judge is not properly performing his or her official duties because of willful misconduct, ethical violations or a permanent disabling health condition.  Although created by the Supreme Court, the Commission operates independently.  The official website of the commission may be found at www.vicjc.org.  The Commission is composed of 9 members—three citizens, three attorneys, and three judges.  The Commission may take various actions to remedy improper conduct.  In an appropriate case, the Commission also may recommend that a judge be placed on disability retirement.    Members of the public who believe that a justice, judge or magistrate has engaged in misconduct should contact the Office of Disciplinary Counsel.  An approved Complaint Form is available.
