Justices

The Virgin Islands Supreme Court is presently composed of three justices.  Appointments to the court are made by the governor with confirmation by the Legislature.  To be considered for appointment a person must be an attorney licensed to practice in the Virgin Islands for ten years.

A justice serves an initial term of office of ten years and upon reconfirmation, during good behavior.  A retired justice, with the approval of the Court may serve as a senior justice. Active and retired judges of courts of record of the Virgin Islands may serve as Designated Justices of the Supreme Court to fill vacancies caused by disqualification or other absence of a justice.

Chief Justice

The initial Chief Justice is designated by the Governor to serve a term of four years. Thereafter, the justices elect the Chief Justice for a three year term.
